US study claims to have found an association between use of #protonpumpihnibitors
(Losec, Nexium, Somac) and risk of heart attack.

Use of alternative gastro instestinal treatments H2 blockers (such as Zantac) was not associated
with increased cardiovascular risk.

The researchers data mined over 16 million documents from 2.9 million patients so the
study may be described as extensive.

However – the authors acknowledged several limitations, including the possibility
PPI usage was an indication of a pre-existing illness and said the findings
required further study.

The study can be found here.

In 2013 a similar study found PPIs were associated with short-term risk of adverse
cardiac events.

The authors of that study concluded that the association was not clear.
