Antiretroviral Treatment for Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Steve and Sandra, actual people. Also pharmacists.
From July 1, 2015 HIV medicines will be available for dispensing in the community.
For a general patient they will cost $37.70 a box, and for concession card holders $6.10 per box.
Community Pharmacists are in a key position to raise awareness,
provide education, and assist people living with HIV. Pharmacists can help with the HIV treatment process by managing adherence and side effects and decreasing the associated stigma.
If you are currently living with HIV, and are working in the area around St James Pharmacy –
please don’t hesitate to give us a call on (02)92312662 to make arrangements for the
ordering and supply of your prescriptions.
Please note St James Pharmacy will not necessarily hold the specific HIV ART medicine in stock –
and this is why we recommend ringing ahead first and making the necessary arrangements.
This is primarily because these medicines are quite expensive, and holding stock of each one would be a costly exercise.
Sandra and I understand the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV status – but want to reassure any
potential patients their confidentiality is respected and guaranteed. After 30 years of being
secreted away to the dungeons of public hospital pharmacies – the treatment of HIV is now in the community where it belongs.
Forgive the pun – but this is a #positive step!
